Tommy Rogers graciously opened his shop to all carvers who wanted to hone their head-carving skills.
Scroll down for a pictorial representation of the instruction.  We had a beautiful day on Saturday
May 5, 2007.  We broke at 12 noon for hot dogs and fixings and some of the group stayed around
until around 4 pm carving and learning Tommy's techniques...From the beginner to the accomplished
carver, all said they learned something new and useful...Thanks Tommy!

Tommy's preparation is evident...blanks, carving stages heads, handouts, sign-in sheet

Another view of the head carving stages models...notice the progression

Actual carving area...where demonstration of tools and techniques were shown

Any questions before we begin?

He makes it look soooo easy, notice the apt attention of his students

Step 1 of drawing the carving lines

Step 2, notice high point of cheek line and bill drawings

Step 3, crown is laid out and side profile of bill drawn

Step 4, notice how he's marked crown before removing wood to round the head

Step 5, wood removed in order to begin shaping the head and cheek

Step 6, eye channel and facial muscles cut in as well as bill shaped

Step 7, Am not I pretty?

Front view of finished head...Total time to carve to this point was 1 hr 45 minutes

Thanks again Tommy for sharing your system with fellow carvers
